OVERVIEW

Welcome to our website which has been created to act as an information hub for athletes, Members and other interested individuals and bodies. We value your views and contributions so please use the site to share information.

The present Board of the Commonwealth Games Council came into existence just eleven months before the 2006 Games in Melbourne. A huge amount of effort was expended by a group of volunteers led by David Evans who had been seconded from the Sports Council for Wales. This group, which included Board Directors, began a race against time to ensure that the team to be sent to the 2006 Games would be fully prepared and equipped.

Starting from almost a clean sheet, selection, travel, clothing, medical and finance committees were set up, and within a relatively short time the plans began to take shape.

As a consequence of the work done a superb Tim Cymru represented Wales.
Team members enjoyed themselves and importantly brought enjoyment to a huge number of children in the Melbourne area whose schools had been ‘adopted’ by us. Team Wales members acquitted themselves well, and made many friends.

It is interesting to note that we are beginning to see some of our Australian friends beginning to visit here as a consequence of the Games and friendships made. Currently plans are progressing for the Youth Games in Puna in October 2008 and for the next Commonwealth Games which will be held in Delhi in 2010.

Side by side with planning for the future the Board are attempting to bring together the history of the Commonwealth Games Council here in Wales. We seek to discover documentation and artefacts to bring together to form a permanent record of the involvement of Wales in the Commonwealth Games movement.

If you have any past records of CGCW please share them with us to ensure a legacy for future generations of athletes, who represent their country. During our visit to Australia we were delighted to discover that one of our team, Malcolm Collins (Boxing Team Manager) had been the flag carrier at the Empire Games in Cardiff. What else don’t we know? Please enlighten us, contact Chris Jenkins about any information you have, no matter how large or small it may seem.
