Pune Criteria for reference only

1   Introduction

This selection policy has been agreed by the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales and outlines the nomination and selection process for the Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008.  The Games are an invitational event for athletes born in 1990 or later.  Wales has been allocated 37 athlete places by the Games organisers.

2    Selection Criteria

CGCW recognises that Youth athletes are developing very quickly and that this should be reflected in the selection process.

The Youth Games are a development opportunity for those athletes and staff likely to represent and win medals for Wales at future Commonwealth Games in particular in 2010, 2014 and beyond.

Individual athletes must demonstrate performance levels that can win medals in Pune 2008 and demonstrate potential for the future.

As numbers are limited, all governing bodies will be required to provide a rationale to support selection including World, Commonwealth or GB rankings.

It is expected that sports will nominate individual athletes rather than teams because of the maximum team member allocation. Where a sport can submit doubles combinations, teams or enter relay events, it is expected that the doubles combinations, teams or relay teams will consist of athletes who have already qualified for individual events.

As it is likely that more than 37 athletes will be nominated sports are asked to list athletes in a priority order.

Based on this information, recommendations to the CGCW Board on any allocation of additional or unfilled places available will be made by the CGCW selection panel appointed for this process.
