Head Quarters Staff - Chef de Mission
It is vital that the CGCW appoints efficient and effective HQ staff who are committed to, and fully support the Cocas “ athlete centered ” philosophy. The HQ staff has a responsibility to Team Wales to ensure that they create the best possible environment which allows every athlete to be the best they can be and thus have the best chance of success at the Games.
The HQ staff is led by the Chef de Mission who is the overall leader of Team Wales and who is the primary spokesman of the Team both prior to and during the Games.
The Chef de Mission has overall management responsibility for the Team and will work with the Team Manager to ensure effective resolution of any issues that might arise within the Team, or with the CGF and the organizing committee at the Games.
Chef de Mission duties before the Games include:
- The development of Team policies with the CGCW
- Attend meetings of CGCW Executive, Board and operational groups as required
- Chair team management meetings prior to Games
- Represent Team Wales at official functions
- Involvement in selection of team management staff.
- Attend pre Games staff training
- Lead recces visits
- Develop “Team Wales” ethos and spirit
- Nominate Team Captain and Flag Bearer
Duties during the Games will include:
- Primary Team spokesperson at the Games
- Represent Team Wales at relevant official functions e.g. Team Receptions, Team press conferences
- Chair team management meetings
- Attend daily CGF Chef de Mission meetings
- Support Team at events and medal ceremonies
- Oversee the implementation of CGCW policies and procedures
- Promote and encourage Team members to support and respect each other and thus foster team spirit
- Maintain Team moral
- Ensure that the Code of Conduct is adhered to in accordance with the Team Member agreements and manage any issues that arise
- Select Flag Bearer for closing ceremony
Post Games
- Involvement in compilation of reports and recommendations for future Games
- Attend all post Games CGCW functions
It is critical that the Chef de Mission is able to work as a member of a team and lead that team. The Chef must have good interpersonal skills and be a good communicator, who is both approachable and enthusiastic and shows respect for and is available to athletes and staff throughout the appointed term of office.
